The Psyche. Psychology is the study of the “psyche.” In the Greek language the word “psyche” meant “soul” and “mind.” Psyche is the common root of
the words “spirit” and “soul.” The concepts of the soul and mind are absent
from most modern definitions of psychology. As we will see in the next chapter,
modern psychology’s naturalistic worldview does not allow for the
existence of a soul or a mind (in any meaningful sense), much less their
scientific study. A Christian worldview not only recognizes the existence of
the soul and mind; it welcomes the application of scientific methods to their
study.
