The study of psychology is about more than research methods. Psychology is more than the brain, personality theories, mental illnesses, psychiatric drugs, and counseling techniques. It is more than learning to analyze, manipulate, or control people.
You do not need to surrender your worldview in order to study psychology nor do you need to compartmentalize your faith. To study psychology, you do not need to adopt anti-Christian assumptions about the nature of God, Mankind, knowledge, right and wrong, psychopathology, or anything else. You can learn about the wonders of the human brain and behavior while maintaining respect for the complete inspiration and authority of the Scriptures. Conversations and debates with classmates and professors about the Christian perspective on psychology represent evangelistic opportunities. Your study of psychology can prepare you to think Christianly about psychology’s influence in academia, the culture, and society. Your studies in psychology can help reduce the Church’s misunderstanding and fear of psychology and help the Church fulfill its duty to minister to the world’s psychological needs. In your study, you join others in physics, biology, history, the arts, sociology, theology, and many other fields seeking a deeper understanding of all of God’s creation. Christ is Lord of all, indeed.
